Coastal Westside - Lohusalu & Paldiski

Country Touring • 1-2 day • from 42 EUR

Take the most alternative day trip around and discover the wild west of Paldiski in this Soviet all-you-can-see buffet.

Just a few decades back, the coastline and casual boat rides used to be off limits for regular folk. And like in the past, there are still rumors about secret military facilities – the most notorious is the submarine base of Paldiski, but there is much more to imagine in massive bunkers, command centers and air fields now reclaimed by nature. While on topic, Rummu might seem like a perfect fit, where the former prison structures now submerged are all surrounded by a very lunar landscape from your favorite sci-fi movie. A local celebrity of sorts is a curious old AN-12 cargo plane, which is now a club house and has retired to only lift the spirits of local kids, who build model planes there.

A more peaceful sight can be found in one of the most picturesque waterfalls around, while the lime-stone cliffs following our route for most of the way reach a new picture potential overlooking the sea from Türisalu and the eventually the peak of Pakri peninsula. On occasion, a lonesome lighthouse will inspire the romantic within as we make our way to hidden beaches to dip a toe in the water. Skipping stones is definitely on the table, so do not be shy to practice for a complete sense of accomplishment.

These extremes are all fused in a wonderful mixture to see, climb and do, as we have the joy of continuous biking on our side.

FAQ

WHAT KIND OF A TOURING BIKE DO I GET?
Well, we have a light-weight champion in store to take you places – the Fuji Absolute 1.3. Between a hybrid and road-bike, it is the perfect balance of durability and function for all the long-distance cycling tours you want to make. And it comes with all the safety gear (i.e. bicycle helmet and additional features) you might need. For more details, you can read on in our equipment section.
WHAT KIND OF AN ACCOMMODATION ARE WE STAYING AT?
If choosing the 2-day option, we have selected something cozy along the way (and preferably near a beach). While not the Hilton hotel, simple is sometimes better yet never lacking. There will be possibilities for dining, washing and sleeping sound at night, as well as keeping all of our travel gear safe for a fresh start in the mornings. All locations will be specified following related booking requests, and we will present all available options according to your interests.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO CHOOSE AN OPTIONAL EVENT, BUT SAY MY HUSBAND DOES?
We have it worked out, so your husband (to follow the example) can go about. In the meantime, we will log some more miles of fun and adventures and rendezvous a little way down the road.
SHOULD I BRING A SWIMMING SUIT JUST IN CASE?
Indeed, for we have that sort of thing included as an integral part of summer joys and a lengthy drive in the countryside (unless you prefer to go au naturel, that is). Of course, considering all genesis-like nakedness of the corporeal form, we cannot guarantee total privacy, when accessing public places. We promise to do our best, but ultimately it is up to you.
WHAT KIND OF A CHALLENGE TO EXPECT?
This tour is designed to cover 60 kilometers on country and forest side roads (even 70, if you feel unstoppable) with little to no terrain elevations in sight. It is definitely not a stage of Tour de France, and we will keep going with relaxation and rest stops in mind to stretch our legs and smell the roses, but long-distance bike trips might still be something of a required taste. The best advice is to consider your capabilities.
SHOULD I PACK A NICE TURKEY SANDWICH?
Just so you know, we anticipate hunger and have planned stops along the way for a nice lunch and dinner, as well as introducing the local snack customs. Otherwise we do not discriminate the toppings found in your lunch- box, unless it could be read in any international airport: weapons, corrosive or radioactive materials and so forth.
HOW DO WE GET TO OUR DESTINATION?
All included, it is part of our Green Initiative to have environmental impact in mind, so we will be taking the train there and back again. Not only is it simple sweet and comfortable in brand-new carrot-looking Stadler FLIRT bullet trains, riding one remains as romantic as in the days of the steam engines. Not only a good opportunity to catch up, but it also has an air-conditioned restroom to adore. Sort-of a cherry on a cherry, but we try.
